Sunshine Coast set for record-breaking 2025 marathon
More than 15,000 runners from across Australia and around the world will descend on Alexandra Headland for the 2025 EVA Air Sunshine Coast Marathon Festival, taking place on Sunday 3 August.

This year marks a significant milestone for the Festival with the introduction of a new single-lap marathon course, a first for the Sunshine Coast. Offering a scenic, flat and AIMS-certified route, the course is perfect for chasing personal bests and is expected to have new course records set this year.
The EVA Air Sunshine Coast Marathon Festival continues to grow in size and significance, with thousands of participants taking part across a weekend that blends serious running with strong community support. This year, over $275,000 has been raised for charity, reinforcing the event’s ongoing impact beyond the finish line.
Among the headline participants are two of Australia’s most recognisable sporting legends—Jonathan Thurston, NRL great, and Lance “Buddy” Franklin, AFL icon. Both will take on the McDonald’s Half Marathon as part of their preparation with the Indigenous Marathon Foundation for the New York City Marathon later this year.
Atlas Events Managing Director, Jason Crowther, says this year’s event is shaping up to be the biggest and most exciting in the event’s 13-year history.
“The new single-lap marathon course showcases the very best of the Sunshine Coast. It’s fast, flat and incredibly scenic, ideal for first-timers and serious marathoners alike. We’re thrilled to welcome runners from around the globe and proud to see the community rally behind our charity partners.”
Queensland Minister for Tourism, Andrew Powell said as Queenslanders we are fortunate to host events like the Sunshine Coast Marathon Festival in such beautiful surrounds.
“Whether competing in the full marathon or one of the shorter distance races, participants can appreciate the idyllic coastal views, with the extended invitation to explore the region in and around the event.
“The strong economic return for local business and tourism - as well as the generous amount raised for charity - make this festival even more special.”

Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli said the EVA Air Sunshine Coast Marathon Festival is a shining example of how our region brings people together, celebrating community, wellbeing and world-class events.
“This year’s record-breaking participation reflects the Sunshine Coast’s growing reputation as a premier destination for sport and lifestyle,” Mayor Natoli said.
“We’re proud to support an event that not only inspires thousands to achieve their personal best but also gives back so generously to our community.
“This year, we also welcome the Indigenous Marathon Foundation and its inspiring ambassadors, including sporting legends Jonathan Thurston and Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin.
“Their presence brings a powerful message of resilience, leadership and unity, and highlights the transformative impact of running in connecting people to Country, culture and community.”
"With seven years to go until the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Sunshine Coast Marathon plays a vital role in preparing our region as a proud Co-Host City and the home of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Marathons.
“While the final course for 2032 is yet to be confirmed, one thing is certain — our stunning environment and vibrant community will be showcased to the world, inspiring visitors to experience the Sunshine Coast for themselves.
“We also acknowledge that many residents are impacted by road closures and traffic and we really thank them for the role they play in the success of this event,” Mayor Natoli said.
With more runners and a longer course footprint, expanded road closures will be in place throughout the day, particularly around Alexandra Headland, Maroochydore, and Mooloolaba. Residents and visitors are encouraged to check the event website for full road closure details and to plan ahead.
The 2025 EVA Air Sunshine Coast Marathon Festival is supported by the Queensland Government through Tourism and Events Queensland, and the Sunshine Coast Council through the Major Events Sponsorship Program.
