Lightning’s new era of leadership for 2026 season

Sunshine Coast Lightning has unveiled its leadership team for the 2026 Suncorp Super Netball season, marking an exciting new chapter for one of the region’s most loved sporting clubs.

Sunshine Coast Lightning new leadership team Courtney Bruce, Liz Watson and Karin Burger

Announced at the club’s Season Launch at Pier 33, Australian Diamonds star Liz Watson has been named Lightning’s fifth Club Captain, stepping into the role following the retirement of former captain Steph Fretwell.

Watson will be supported by a powerhouse pair of Vice Captains – fellow Diamonds defender Courtney Bruce and new recruit, Silver Ferns captain Karin Burger – creating one of the most experienced leadership trios in the national league.

Mayor Rosanna Natoli said the announcement reflects the strength, professionalism and ambition that Lightning brings to the Sunshine Coast community.

“Lightning continues to make our region proud, not only through their performance on court but through the character and leadership they show off it,” Mayor Natoli said.

“To have athletes of Liz, Courtney and Karin’s calibre leading a club that calls the Sunshine Coast home is incredibly special. They are role models for every young person who dreams big.”

Watson, who has served as Lightning’s Vice Captain for the past two seasons, said she was humbled by the opportunity.

“I am incredibly honoured to be announced in this position. Sunshine Coast Lightning has had some incredible netball legends as Captains in the past and I’m very grateful to help continue the amazing work they have done, alongside Courtney and Karin and our incredible playing group,” she said.

Bruce also welcomed the opportunity to take on a greater leadership role in her third season with the club.

“Excited to step into the Vice Captain role alongside Karin, supporting Liz as she leads the way. Grateful for the trust and the opportunity to serve this team as we chase something special together.”

Burger, who has made an immediate impact since joining Lightning, said she feels privileged to contribute to the club’s strong culture.

“I’m truly honoured and humbled by the trust the team has placed in me. Joining a group with such experienced and accomplished leaders is a privilege. I see my role as contributing from my experience while also growing my own game and leadership within this new environment.”

Head Coach Belinda Reynolds said the trio represents the very best of the club’s values and aspirations.

Building on a decade of community pride and support

Mayor Natoli said the leadership announcement helps energise fans ahead of a huge season for the club.

“Lightning matches are an electric part of our local sporting culture. I encourage our whole community to get behind the team, fill UniSC Arena, and celebrate another season of elite netball on the Sunshine Coast,” she added.

Council is a proud foundation partner alongside UniSC. Established as a start-up team in partnership with the University of Sunshine Coast in 2016, Lightning has become one of the most successful sporting teams in the country.

The team has developed a strong local presence and connection with the Sunshine Coast region and is one of the most recognised elite women’s teams in Australia.

Lightning opens its 2026 campaign on Sunday 15 March away against West Coast Fever, before returning home for the 'Battle of the Bruce' on Saturday 21 March at UniSC Arena.
