Test your local knowledge this Heritage Month

Think you know your local history?

Sunshine Coast Libraries invites you to test your knowledge at a special Heritage Month trivia event.

Enjoy a morning of social and interactive entertainment at Nambour’s Heritage Library on Friday, April 19.

Hosted by Trivia Nights, guests can expect a game-show style event using wireless buzzers and multiple-choice answers. Questions celebrate the Sunshine Coast and Heritage Month.

Jenny Ryan, Heritage Library Supervisor said this was a great opportunity for our community members to test their local history knowledge and learn something new.

“Questions cover local landmarks, personalities, geography and historical events,” Jenny said.

“For example, did you know that before we became known as the Sunshine Coast, our region was referred to as The Near North Coast?”

What is Heritage Month?

Heritage Month is Australia’s largest community-driven celebration of heritage. This year’s theme is ‘Connections’. It runs from Thursday, April 18 to Sunday, May 19 2024 in Queensland.

Sunshine Coast Council is hosting several events this year including Landsborough Museum Street Festival and First Nations Family Fun Day. For more information head to heritage.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/about/programs-and-events.

“Our heritage is our shared past. It shows us who had an impact on the development of our local area and reminds us that it is important to preserve the past for future generations to revisit,” Jenny said.

“Events like these provide a fun way for our community to unite through a shared respect for culture and history.”

How to find out more about local history

Sunshine Coast Council is home to a variety of Heritage Resources. The Heritage Library, located on level 2 at Nambour Library is a great resource for anyone looking to improve their local history knowledge.

“A visit to the Heritage Library to view collections, or a scroll through the 30,000 images on Picture Sunshine Coast are two ways to learn more about our local history,” Jenny said.

“There are maps, diaries, postcards, letters and thousands of pages of research available at the Heritage Library to connect you to historical facts.”

The Heritage Library has information on Sunshine Coast people, places, parks and road names, house histories and more.

Sunshine Coast Council acknowledges the Sunshine Coast Country, home of the Kabi Kabi peoples and the Jinibara peoples, the Traditional Custodians, whose lands and waters we all now share. We wish to pay respect to their Elders – past, present and emerging, and acknowledge the important role First Nations people continue to play within the Sunshine Coast community.
