Everybody’s a BiospHERO! Festival celebrates sustainable Sunshine Coast

The countdown is on for BiospHERO Day, our Sunshine Coast Biosphere’s first community festival offering free and family-friendly fun for everyone, all while celebrating sustainability in our region on November 5.

BiospHERO Day is the culmination of a week-long program of events celebrating people and nature in our Sunshine Coast Biosphere as part of the International Day for Biosphere Reserves.

The November 5 event at the Metropolitan in Maroochydore will feature free workshops, kids’ activities, art and crafts, live music, food trucks and much more.

A festival at the forefront of sustainability, BiospHERO Day aims to be plastic-free, with attendees encouraged to bring their reusable cups, water bottles and cutlery and take active transport, public transport or carpool to the event.

Sunshine Coast Biosphere Community Advisory Group Chair Will Shrapnel said the event was a chance for everyone to be their own BiospHERO.

“It is always exciting to consider what might be possible for the Sunshine Coast Biosphere when we come together as a community and reflect upon the things that are most valuable to us,” Mr Shrapnel said.

“I am also privileged to see first-hand the hard work and contribution that is made by so many people across our region to support the aims of our Biosphere.”

Sunshine Coast Council Mayor Mark Jamieson, who is also the Biosphere Coordinating Committee Chair, said the festival would be the largest celebration of our Biosphere held since the historic designation in 2022.

“On November 5 in Maroochydore, this celebration of people and nature in our young Biosphere will be a place where hope and action for our shared future can flourish,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“Coming together, finding new ways to be sustainable and getting involved as a community – this is all what it means to be a part of a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.”

Attendees can take broken small household items and clothes that need mending to the Repair Café to give their goods a second chance at life to reduce waste, share skills and save money.

Missed registrations? No worries: there are plenty more activities for kids and adults to try on the day, including making seed bombs to grow at home, connecting with local producers and listening to biosphere soundscapes from around the world.

Hop on the smoothie bike and generate the power for your own thirst-quenching beverage, or dive into group games designed to bring the community together.

This event will offer something for all ages, with great tips on how to live, work and play sustainably in our Sunshine Coast Biosphere.
