Nature's smallest engineers found in Bli Bli
Discover the Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary this winter, with accessible boardwalk adventures, unique wildlife encounters and family-friendly nature experiences.
Thousands of tiny engineers have been seen scuttling around the Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary, sporting bright orange hard hats, and busily digging burrows.
This phenomenon doesn’t appear to be fazing sanctuary volunteers who say they’ve seen it all before – they are of course referring to a mangrove marvel, the fiddler crab.
Fiddler crabs are just one of the many fascinating species that inhabit the Maroochy Wetlands Sanctuary, making this free, accessible adventure a wildlife spotters dream.
All about the wetlands
Sunshine Coast Council Environment Portfolio Councillor Maria Suarez said the cooler winter months, when there were less mosquitos, were the perfect time to visit the sanctuary.
“The recently updated 900 metre elevated boardwalk, ensures all abilities can enjoy the peaceful journey through the sanctuary as it winds its way to the Maroochy River,” Cr Suarez said.
“And with plenty of stopping points along the way, you can rest and take in the unique surroundings.”
Accessible adventure
The boardwalk offers a wonderful way to explore the sanctuary by foot, pram or wheelchair.
A self-guided audio trail is available to guide visitors through this unique ecosystem, offering an engaging way to explore its natural and cultural values through audio, sensory and tactile experiences.
The trail can also be accessed via the Sunshine Coast Council app.

During the winter months the sanctuary hosts a range of events suitable for all groups. Coming up next:
- Monday 10 August 8–10am: Bird Walk with informative guide Rob Kernot
- Saturday 15 August 9.30–11am: Mangrove Magic , an interactive workshop for kids with marine botanist Lana Baskerville.
