Don't miss your chance to help manage our region's growth and create a less wasteful region, with two major strategies now open for community feedback.

Sunshine Coast Council has shared its Draft Sunshine Coast Waste Strategy 2023-41 with ideas such as power-generating waste, turning discarded plastic into park benches and recovery centres that are thriving economic hubs.

The strategy supports Council's goal to send zero waste to landfill by 2041, and is open for community feedback until August 9 on the Have Your Say website, where you can also register to attend a community workshop on July 31.

“Imagine it’s 2041 and households now dispose of less than 200kg of rubbish each year – as opposed to 700kg in 2023 – and this is collected by a fleet of hydrogen powered waste trucks with zero carbon emissions.”

Environment Portfolio Councillor Maria Suarez

Meanwhile, Council is proposing changes to its Banksia Award-winning Environment and Liveability Strategy on climate change, UNESCO Biosphere status, our dark sky, greener neighbourhoods and much more.

Now in its sixth year, the Strategy provides long-term direction for guiding growth to deliver a healthy environment and liveable Sunshine Coast to 2041.

You can explore the full list of proposed changes and give your feedback on the Have Your Say website until August 13, and register for one of four online workshops offering information on the Strategy and the proposed changes.

“To make sure the Strategy keeps pace with change, we asked residents what they viewed as the emerging issues or opportunities for the region, as well as priority actions for Council."

Environment Portfolio Councillor Peter Cox

Sunshine Coast Council acknowledges the Sunshine Coast Country, home of the Kabi Kabi peoples and the Jinibara peoples, the Traditional Custodians, whose lands and waters we all now share. We wish to pay respect to their Elders – past, present and emerging, and acknowledge the important role First Nations people continue to play within the Sunshine Coast community.
