Magical end to turtle season
It's the end of the Sunshine Coast turtle nesting season and we are sending a big thanks to our volunteers.
May marks the end of the Sunshine Coast turtle nesting season and also coincides with World Turtle Day (May 23). This year, Sunshine Coast Council is extending it's gratitude to the remarkable TurtleCare volunteers who have dedicated their time and energy to turtle conservation efforts across our beautiful Sunshine Coast.
TurtleCare volunteers are highly trained citizen scientists who are making an incredible contribution to the ongoing survival of critically endangered turtles by monitoring nesting turtles, relocating nests if necessary for hatchling survival, and providing essential data to support this protection of these majestic animal.
Throughout the summer, our volunteers have worked tirelessly, sometimes in challenging conditions, to ensure the safety and success of turtle nests along our beaches. From early morning patrols to late-night hatchling releases, their unwavering dedication has made a significant impact to the future of these endangered species.
We would also like to thank our community for their support – whether it was switching off their outdoor lights from 8pm, calling the TurtleCare hotline to report a nest, helping to clean up the beach or by staying off the dunes.
Let’s continue to make tracks together towards saving one of the Sunshine Coast’s most beloved marine animals.
