Precious areas and wildlife will be better protected after the awarding of vital funding to a range of Sunshine Coast community groups.

Thanks to ratepayers who contribute to Sunshine Coast Council’s Environment Levy Partnership Funding Program, 22 dedicated community groups will receive a share of $635,500 annually for the next three years.

This support empowers them to continue their vital work protecting our natural treasures.

With this three-year partnership, these groups can now plan for the future with confidence and build even greater capacity to make a lasting impact. Year two and three funding is subject to completion of a yearly progress report and the adoption of Council’s annual Environment Levy budget.

Sunshine Coast Council Environment and Liveability joint portfolio Councillor Maria Suarez said the funding would go towards operational expenses and allow volunteers to continue providing valuable support to our wildlife and environment.

Cr Suarez said it would also support the delivery of the Sunshine Coast Environment and Liveability Strategy.

“We are very grateful for the commitment and dedication of these groups and their members to our region and Sunshine Coast Biosphere,” Cr Suarez said.

“Last financial year, 4416 volunteers from our 19 partner groups donated more than 360,000 hours of their own time to improve our environment and look after our wildlife.

“Amazingly, this equates to more than $15.5 million in contributions towards our environment.

“That shows the value of the Environment Levy right there – as this grant program would not be possible without the contributions made by Sunshine Coast property owners through their rate payments.”

“Thanks to the funding, these groups can continue to support, rescue and nurse our native animals back to health or restore and preserve our waterways and hinterland and coastal environments,” Cr Burns said.

“Groups like Bat Rescue Inc - who deliver flying-fox education at schools and events, take a lead role in the management of catastrophic heat events and advocate for flying-fox conservation in the community which complements the work Council does through its Regional Flying-fox Management Plan.”

“Another example is the Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network who partnered with Council to develop and maintain the Koala Fodder Plantation at Pinelands Drive Park to supply foliage for the rehabilitation and care of injured and orphaned koalas, which supports Council’s Koala Conservation Plan,” Cr Burns said.
