Who knew seaweed could be so fascinating!

Seaweed (algae) is a common sight on the beaches - especially after storms where waves knock it from its undersea home. There are (loosely) three types of seaweed: green, brown and red.

Red algae

Red algae seaweed is the coolest, and the oldest, of all the algaes. Born from the evolution of single celled blue bacteria approximately 3.5 billion years ago. In comparison, brown seaweed evolved 2.5 billion years and green seaweed evolved relatively recent at 500 million years ago.

Reds and browns are the ‘true seaweeds'. The green algae seaweed is genetically closer to a tomato plant than it is to red algae.

Fun fact

More than half the oxygen present in the atmosphere comes from algae in the oceans.
