Sunshine Coast residents urged to be COVID aware and get vaccinated

Sunshine Coast residents are strongly encouraged to register their interest in getting vaccinated and come forward for testing if they have any COVID-19 symptoms (no matter how minor), as south east Queensland enters a three-day lockdown from 6pm today (29 June 2021).

Sunshine Coast Council Mayor and Local Disaster Management Group chair Mark Jamieson said it was vital to detect if there were positive cases in the community as quickly as possible and minimise the risk of exposure by only leaving home for essential purposes as outlined by the Chief Health Officer.

You can only leave your residence (which includes temporary accommodation such as a holiday rental) for limited permitted purposes such as:

  • obtaining essential goods or services, including healthcare (including vaccinations)
  • exercise
  • attending essential work or childcare
  • assisting vulnerable persons.

Residents are encouraged to stay in their local area wherever possible.

Visit Queensland Health’s website for full details on restrictions in Queensland.

Mayor Jamieson reminded people that they needed to get two doses of the vaccine to be fully vaccinated.

“Remember to book your second dose appointment before leaving your first dose appointment and if you are due to receive your second dose, please make sure you follow up and do so,” Mayor Jamieson said.

He urged residents and visitors to comply with Queensland Health directions including handwashing, social distancing, checking in to any venues that you visit with the Queensland Government QR code and get tested if you have any symptoms.

“Given the particularly virulent strain of the COVID-19 virus that has recently been detected in some community transmission cases in south east Queensland, it is vital everyone complies with the Chief Health Officer’s directions.

“There is no room for complacency with any of this and I am asking everyone to again do their part to help stop the spread of COVID-19.”

He urged Sunshine Coast residents and visitors to check Queensland Health’s website for updates and stay COVID alert.

“We also want everyone to follow all of the steps that we have all become familiar with now in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“Options for testing are listed on Queensland Health’s website and include a drive-through testing clinic at Caloundra Aerodrome, 14 Pathfinder Drive, Caloundra West from 7am to 3pm weekdays. A GP referral is not needed.”

Be COVID-19 alert
If you have any of the following COVID-19 symptoms, no matter how mild, call your doctor or 13HEALTH (13 43 25 84) and get tested:
• fever
• cough
• sore throat
• shortness of breath
• runny nose
• fatigue
• loss of smell and/or taste.
Call emergency services on Triple Zero (000) if you are very sick.

Visit Queensland Health’s website for the full list of testing centres near you, contact tracing locations and for further information.

Changes to council services and facilities
Access to some council services and facilities will be affected due to the restrictions in place. Visit council’s website for full details.

Council’s customer service centres are closed until Monday 5 July at 8.30am. Pensioner rate concession applications for 2020/2021 financial year will be accepted until 7 July, extended from 30 June deadline to allow additional time. Visit the Pay and apply section of council’s website for eligibility criteria and an application form.

Phone and online contact options are available by phoning 5475 7272 or visit www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/Council/Contact-Council to see all of the options available.

Waste services and facilities
Council kerbside waste services, such as household rubbish collection, will continue as usual. If you need to visit council’s waste facilities to dispose of excess general waste, council asks that in the interest of public health, you use tap-and-pay (payWave) to make your payment. Recycling centres will close for the duration of the lockdown.

Outdoor areas
To limit opportunities for people to congregate and, in the interests of the health and safety of our community, barbecues, play and exercise equipment in council managed parks and skate parks will be closed for the duration of the lockdown.

“These closures will reduce the opportunities for people to come together in groups, to limit the risk of transmission of COVID-19,” Mayor Jamieson said.

“I do want to emphasise that council parks remain open to the community, but playground equipment within those parks will not be able to be used.”

Council venues
All libraries (including the mobile library), Caloundra Regional Gallery, Bankfoot House, Venue 114, Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, Maleny including the Rainforest Discovery Centre, Arts and Ecology Centre, Maroochy Bushland Botanic Gardens, Tanawha, community halls and venues will be closed during the lockdown. Council’s online library is available. Join for free, to receive 24/7 access to music, magazines, books, online programs and more.
