Young Leaders kick off year of impact
The Sunshine Coast’s Young Leaders Academy has welcomed a new group of young people for 2026, marking the program’s third year of supporting emerging leaders across the region.

The program brings together eleven passionate and diverse young leaders who are enthusiastic about making a positive impact in their communities.
The group came together on Saturday 7 February for a launch day centred on story, reflection and shared learning – setting the tone for their year‑long leadership journey.
The day opened with a Welcome to Country and smoking ceremony led by Aunty Bridgette. Her generosity, warmth and cultural guidance grounded the group on Kabi Kabi Country and created a space of respect, connection and reflection.
Participants said the ceremony set a meaningful tone for the day and helped create a strong sense of belonging from the outset.

Across the day, young people shared their personal leadership journeys and explored different ways leadership can be expressed. Conversations focused on leadership as something that grows through relationships, values and action, rather than titles or positions.
Participant Sienna said the launch day helped her feel connected from the start.
“An inspiring space filled with powerful stories and ideas. I left the day feeling energised and supported,” Sienna said.
Another participant, Kevin, said the launch day challenged his thinking about leadership.
“It showed me that leadership doesn’t look one way. There are many ways to lead and create change,” Kevin said.
The Academy continues its commitment to inclusive and community‑focused approaches to leadership development.
The program is grounded in place and relationships, and encourages young people to lead in ways that feel genuine and connected to their communities.
The year ahead
In the coming months, participants will regularly attend workshops, share meals, and engage in collaborative learning. They will actively explore practical leadership tools and approaches to build confidence, strengthen their skills, and deliver youth-led initiatives across the Sunshine Coast. By working closely with Council and the community, they will help implement the Youth Plan.
Through the Young Leaders Academy, young people are supported to imagine what’s possible and take meaningful steps towards positive change in their communities.

Young people on the Sunshine Coast
Established in 2024, the Young Leaders Academy supports young people to develop practical leadership skills, strengthen community leadership practices, and contribute meaningfully to Council priorities.
In 2025, Academy members played a key role in co‑designing and co-delivering youth engagement activities to inform the draft Thriving Futures: Sunshine Coast Youth Plan 2026–2031,
This work reflects Council’s commitment to a thriving, inclusive Sunshine Coast, where young voices help shape the region’s future. The final plan will be presented to Council in 2026.
