Unique youth event where spirits will soar
Learning about good-mood food, hearing from inspirational speakers and doing mind and body-boosting exercise will be the highlights of an uplifting event for young people on the Sunshine Coast.
Learning about good-mood food, hearing from inspirational speakers and doing mind and body-boosting exercise will be the highlights of an uplifting event for young people on the Sunshine Coast.
The free Rewired: Youth-led mental health day, being organised by the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Thompson Institute in partnership with Sunshine Coast Council, will be held at Venue 114 on Saturday, October 21 from 10am to 4pm.
Young people, aged 16 to 25, are invited to take part.
The exciting program has been created by a group of 10 young people, including UniSC and high school students, to be a space where people can talk openly about their youth mental health experiences and share tips for prioritising wellbeing.
It includes food that can boost your mood, great live music, and empowering workshops where you can learn how to better manage your emotions and support others when they are down.
There will also be a range of fun and challenging exercise options, including yoga and boxing as well as a meditation to be hosted by a Buddhist nun. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from pro-surfer and mental health advocate Cooper Chapman and former triathlete Alexa Leary who overcame a life-threatening accident to become a champion Australian Paralympic swimmer.
While it’s free, those going will need to register and can do so by visiting Council’s website and searching ‘young people’.
Sunshine Coast Council Community Portfolio Councillor David Law said the event had been created exclusively by young people for young people on the Coast.
“Last year we engaged hundreds of young people on the Sunshine Coast to identify areas of priority and concern for our younger residents. The number one concern from more than 600 respondents was youth mental health,” Cr Law said.
“An amazing group of young people teamed up with Council and UniSC Thompson Institute to support the delivering of the Rewired: a Youth-led Mental Health event.”
Funding support for the program has come from Council’s Youth Community Grant and from a generous donation of $20,000 from a Sunshine Coast family whose son lived with a mental illness and died recently.
