Looking for an easy adventure that feels miles away from suburbia? Say hello to the Mooloolah River National Park: Mooloolah River Section a hidden pocket of wetlands tucked between Sippy Downs and Brightwater that many locals still haven’t discovered.

Quiet, scenic and full of surprises, this walk is perfect for slowing down, stretching your legs and keeping an eye out for wildlife.

The walk

This 5km adventure follows a mix of trail sections through the park, taking in three beautiful tracks:

  • Boronia Trail
  • Aemula (Banksia) Trail
  • Littoralis (She‑oak) Trail

The route is part out‑and‑back, part loop, which keeps things interesting as the scenery changes from coastal heath to open wetlands and glimpses toward the river environment.

Fun fact: Despite the name, the walking trails don’t actually take you to the river itself – but the surrounding landscape is well worth the visit.

Why you’ll love it

  • A classic example of coastal wet heath habitat
  • Masses of native plants and seasonal wildflowers
  • Fragrant boronia shrubs you’ll smell before you see
  • Great birdwatching – look out for rainbow bee‑eaters if you’re lucky
  • Peaceful, uncrowded and close to home

Bring your camera, take your time, and enjoy the sounds of nature.

Good to know

  • Suitable for walkers and runners
  • Ideal for nature lovers and birdwatchers
  • No dogs (this is a national park)

Accessibility bonus

There’s also a sealed shared‑use path (Trail 5) along the northern boundary near the motorway. It’s suitable for:

  • Recreational cyclists
  • Prams
  • Wheelchairs

It’s the only trail in the park that provides cycle access.

Best time to go

Early morning or late afternoon is best – it’s cooler, quieter and when wildlife is most active.
