Share your ‘straight to the pool room’ moment
If you have a photo of local sport (we're talking everything from backyard cricket to the school sack race), and it's dated before the year 2000, send it in for a chance to win.
Did you beat your little brother in the downhill billy cart race, receive a ribbon in the school high jump competition or get a trophy for that whopper you reeled in at the Cod Hole?
If you have a favourite everyday sporting memory captured on film, it’s time to enter the 2025 Heritage Calendar Competition
Sport through the ages
The theme for 2025 is ‘sport through the ages’ and Sunshine Coast Council is calling on our community to submit everything from family games of backyard cricket to the local lawn bowls championship.
Share memories with family
Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli said the Heritage Calendar was a great way to celebrate the real story of the Sunshine Coast in photos.
“Most of us have fond memories of our sporting moments - and when captured on film, these tell us so much about everyday Sunshine Coast life,” Mayor Natoli said.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to reminisce about the good old days and celebrate the sports that have shaped our community.
“Going through old photos is also a great way to connect with children and grandchildren and tell the stories that may otherwise be forgotten.”
Photos to look for
Cultural Heritage Coordinator Peter Connell said heritage didn’t have to mean old, it just needed to be relevant.
“We’re calling for pre-millennium photos, taken on the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Connell said.
“So often these languish in old shoe boxes, the ‘non-framers’, the forgotten past.
“From the clothes worn to the sports played, these all serve a vital role in preserving our cultural heritage.
“While digital cameras were around pre-2000, most people would still have had albums, physical photos or slides.
“Once you’ve gone through the images, it’s a great time to digitise your favourites at Council’s free preservation stations in libraries or consider donating unwanted images to Picture Sunshine Coast.”
