Every year hundreds of dogs and cats are abandoned or surrendered to the pound. Often the circumstances are out of their owners control, illness or moving into care are two common reasons, particularly for senior pets.
Sunshine Coast Council is proud to work together with our wonderful pet partners RSPCA Queensland, 4Paws Animal Rescue and Sunshine Coast Animal Refugee (SCARS) to help these animals. Many of those who assist are dedicated volunteers, providing love, care and hope for thousands of animals throughout the year.

Meet Jasper
Jasper was adopted from SCARS by our Community and Animal Education Supervisor Hannah. Jasper’s Mum Jiji was collected from the pound heavily pregnant and went straight into foster care where she had four kittens, two girls and two boys. Sadly the girls didn’t survive, probably due to the stress of being heavily pregnant on the street. The two little boys were taken back to SCARS where they were both adopted. Hannah’s son has learnt everything there is to know about responsible pet ownership and Jasper is certainly living a purr-fect life.
Meet Eddie
Eddie is an 8-year-old Fox Terrier Cross that ended up at our Council Pound. He was in poor condition – he had a mouth full of rotten teeth and itchy skin, he needed help! His teeth required major surgery and he needed some old-fashioned TLC. Fast forward three months…he has recovered from all his treatment and has been adopted. Now he goes by Edward, befitting his new role as king of the castle. His new family adore him and he is such a good boy living his best life.

Meet Rebel
Rebel, a 16-year-old Min Pin came to our Council pound in July this year. She was thin, frail and confused. This dear girl was placed under 4Paws Animal Rescue care and there has been no looking back. Rebel is enjoying life with her wonderful carer, going for leisurely walks and tucking into hearty meals. This lucky pup found her last forever home and is loved by all. Often older dogs are passed over for younger animals, although they have so much love and companionship to give.

Meet Zeus and Shayla
When Staffies Zeus and Shayla lost their owner it was clear they would struggle in a shelter. At 12- and 13-years young they were given a thorough check by the vet. Other than few lumps and bumps expected at their age, they had relatively normal blood test results and were in good health.
SCARS shared a post on their social media pages and were able to place them into a foster home. Within two weeks of being in a foster home these beautiful oldies won their carers hearts. They will remain part of the SCARS family as permanent fosters, for the rest of their lives.
