Multicultural Queensland Month takes place in August each year and focusses on creating a more inclusive multicultural Queensland through learning, action and celebration.
Here’s how to enjoy the event locally with a range of free or low-cost activities.
Beat to your own drum workshop
21-28 August

Find your rhythm and enjoy the musical hums of the djembe drums as you immerse yourself in this West African Drumming workshop. Explore the beats and create a song with Rhythm Culture, as you learn the three essential chords to form the ensemble. Exercise your body, mind and soul as you coordinate the taps on your drum. Walk away with a taste of this unique cultural experience and a beat in your step. $10 per person, registration is essential. For ages 16 and over.

Translate Languages Workshop

Travelling overseas? Want to learn a new language? Explore the world around you in hundreds of languages by turning your electronic device into a useful translator. Get started discovering language translating apps and programs such as Duolingo, Memrise, Google Translate and more. Join library staff in this group activity where you can follow along on your device. Registration is free, but essential.

Conversation Circles
Conversation circles are informal, fun gatherings of people from non-English speaking backgrounds that aims to improve English conversation skills. By conversing in a friendly setting participants help each other develop understanding and skills.
A trained teacher is on hand to support you to build confidence and relationships within the local community.

Read and Write for Life
Libraries offers free and confidential help to adults who want to improve their general literacy skills. This includes reading, writing, speaking, listening, maths and basic computer skills. Sessions are held across all library locations and can be one-on-one or in small groups.
The Read and Write for Life program has been running for more than 33 years and has assisted thousands of people to apply for work, read to their children and improve their confidence.
