Help to grow our seed library
Did you know you can borrow seeds from all Sunshine Coast Libraries?
Just like your usual library borrowing experience, the Seed Library allows you to “borrow” seeds from a library to grow at home.
Seed libraries thrive on the generosity of savvy home gardeners who save and share their excess seeds back to libraries once the plant has matured.
By donating seeds, you’re helping to grow a stronger, more resilient local food system and ensuring your community has access to diverse plant varieties.
Harvesting seeds is simpler than you might think!
- Choose a healthy, productive plant in your garden.
- Allow the plants, fruit, flowers or seed pods to fully mature.
- Once mature, collect the seeds, clean them by removing any pulp or debris and let them dry completely.
- Store them in envelopes or jars to maintain their viability. Make note of the plant variety and harvest date.
- Drop them into a donations box at your closest Sunshine Coast Library .
You can donate a variety of seeds including fruit, vegetables, herbs, flowers and natives.
What to harvest in December:
Tomatoes: Let the fruit fully ripen before collecting the seeds from inside the fruit.
Capsicums and Chilies: Slice open bright, fully ripened peppers or chillies to harvest seeds.
Basil: Gather seeds from flowers that have turned brown and dry.
Zucchini: Allow the zucchini to grow large and overripe before scooping out some seeds.
Remember to label your seeds with the plant name, variety and harvest date before donating them to your local seed library.
