Help our Seed Library bloom
Grab, grow and donate seeds to your local library
Did you know you can borrow seeds from all Sunshine Coast Libraries?
Just like borrowing a book, our Seed Library lets you “borrow” seeds to grow at home.
When your plants mature, you can return seeds to help others grow too!
The Seed Library thrives thanks to generous home gardeners who share their saved seeds.
By donating, you’re helping build a stronger, more resilient local food system and keeping diverse plant varieties alive for our community.
Harvesting seeds is easier than you think:
- Choose healthy, productive plants in your garden.
- Allow the plants, fruit, flowers or seed pods to fully mature.
- Once mature, collect seeds, clean off pulp or debris and dry completely.
- Store in envelopes or jars and label with plant variety and harvest date.
- Drop them into the donation box at your nearest Sunshine Coast Library .
You can donate a variety of seeds including fruit, vegetables, herbs, flowers and natives.
What to harvest in December/January:
- Tomatoes: Let the fruit fully ripen before collecting the seeds from inside the fruit.
- Capsicums and Chillies: Slice open bright, fully ripened peppers or chillies to harvest seeds.
- Basil: Gather seeds from flowers that have turned brown and dry.
- Zucchini: Allow the zucchini to grow large and overripe before scooping out some seeds.
Remember to label your seeds with the plant name, variety and harvest date before donating them to your local seed library.
You can find more information about the Seed Library on the Sunshine Coast Libraries website.
