Grow your future with Council’s work experience program
High school students, university and TAFE students can get a head start on their career through Sunshine Coast Council’s 2026 work experience program.

Applications are open now for placements, which are available year-round.
Students in years 10 through to 12, tertiary students and Diverse Queensland Workforce participants will have the chance to step out of the classroom into a real workplace to learn practical skills, try different roles and see how local government works from the ground up.
Placements are available across a diverse range of Council teams, giving students practical experience in their chosen field and a real understanding of how local government operates.
Council’s work experience program offers learning opportunities across a range of teams, including Parks and Gardens, Libraries, Environmental Operations, Digital Information Technology, and more.
Sunshine Coast Council Environment and Liveability Portfolio Councillor Tim Burns said the Work Experience Program helped young people connect their interests with real job opportunities.
“This program is a fantastic way for young people to discover the diverse career opportunities available at Council and learn about how local governments operate,” Cr Burns said.
“It’s about more than work experience, it’s about showing young people there are rewarding, long-term careers right here on the Sunshine Coast.”
What students can explore
Participants gain hands-on skills, discover different career pathways and build confidence in a real-world setting.
Sunshine Coast Council’s Parks and Gardens Manager Nicholas Coluccio said the program was designed to be supportive, practical and inspiring.
“Students can gain practical experience in a range of fields across Parks and Gardens, including horticulture, turf and irrigation, nursery operations, infrastructure maintenance and administration,” Mr Coluccio said.
“Our team enjoys sharing their knowledge and helping students understand what different roles involve.”
“Students don’t just watch – they take part, ask questions and learn what a day on the job really looks like.”

Real experiences, real impact
After moving to Australia, Sonia Mars joined Council through a two-week work experience placement as part of the Diverse Queensland Workforce Program. The opportunity gave her a supportive environment to learn how Council works, build confidence and gain practical experience.
That first placement quickly led to a casual role, then a longer contract, and now longer term employment.
Sonia said the experience helped her feel supported and valued while building a meaningful career.
“Working at Council has been more than a professional opportunity, it has been a deeply personal one,” Sonia said.
“I’m proud to now contribute to the same community that welcomed me and gave me a chance.”
