Global top four: new Sunshine Coast library celebrated
Library+ Caloundra shortlisted for international honour
Sunshine Coast Council's Library+ Caloundra has been shortlisted for the prestigious Public Library of the Year Award, presented by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions.
The recently transformed facility is one of only four libraries worldwide selected as finalists.
The international accolade celebrates the transformation of a former administration building into a vibrant community destination that combines lifelong learning, creativity, technology and sustainability under one roof.
Library+ was recognised for its innovative design, strong community impact and future-focused approach to public library services.
The nomination builds on a growing list of achievements for the facility, including:
- Winner, Regional Growth category, 2026 National Awards for Local Government
- Highly Commended, 2026 Australian Library and Information Association Library Design Awards
- 6-Star Green Star rating for sustainability and environmental performance.
Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli said the nomination was an acknowledgment of Council's commitment to delivering outstanding community infrastructure.
“This nomination celebrates a library that does more than house books,” Mayor Natoli said.
“Library+ Caloundra is a vibrant community hub where people can connect, learn, create and access essential services.
“The facility was designed to meet the evolving needs of the Sunshine Coast community.
“We listened to our residents and delivered a space that reflects how people use libraries today.
“Our libraries are inclusive, modern and dynamic spaces that help build strong, connected communities.”

Delivering real benefits for the community
Since opening, Library+ Caloundra has become one of the region's most popular community facilities.
Monthly visitation has increased by approximately 65 per cent, attracting about 33,000 visits each month, while membership has grown by 24 per cent.
The space has evolved from a traditional library into a welcoming community gathering place where people of all ages can learn new skills, access technology, participate in programs, discover local history, attend exhibitions and connect with others.
The library supports lifelong learning through:
- early literacy and youth programs
- technology and literacy classes for adults
- STEM, digital and creative skill development
- makerspace and digital media studios
- community workshops, events and exhibitions
- local history and cultural experiences.
Division 2 Councillor Terry Landsberg said the facility was making a positive difference in people's lives.
“Library+ Caloundra is delivering real benefits for our community every day,” Cr Landsberg said.
“It is a place where people can learn new skills, access technology, attend programs and connect with others.
“We've seen families, students, seniors, community groups and creatives embrace the space from day one.
“It is wonderful to see so many people making the space their own, and so many taking this opportunity to discover their local library for the first time.”
A hub for creativity, culture and innovation
One reason Library+ Caloundra has attracted national and international attention is its role as a creative and cultural destination for the region.
The facility brings together learning, creativity and culture through the makerspace, digital media studios, exhibitions, artist talks, workshops and creative residencies.
These spaces provide opportunities for Sunshine Coast residents to explore new technologies, develop creative skills, share ideas and tell local stories.
During Horizon Festival 2026, Library+ hosted Radical Hope Machine 2, which brought together artists, writers, technologists and community members to create an immersive experience combining storytelling, digital technology and community participation.
The community-led Flutter project further activated the library through workshops, exhibitions and an interactive public artwork inspired by contributions from local participants.
The resulting installation, by artist Jade Oakley, transforms the library atrium into a dynamic and engaging experience every afternoon that celebrates creativity and community connection.
These initiatives demonstrate how Library+ Caloundra supports not only learning and literacy, but also creativity, culture, innovation and community belonging.
Sustainability by design
Library+ Caloundra is also recognised for its sustainability leadership.
By repurposing the former Caloundra Administration Building, Council significantly reduced construction waste, conserved resources and extended the life of an existing community asset.
The adaptive reuse project achieved a 6-Star Green Star rating and incorporates energy-efficient systems, water-saving measures and battery energy storage technology that supports long-term environmental and operational benefits.
Compared to the original facility, Library+ has achieved a significant 48% reduction in energy use, demonstrating Council’s commitment to sustainability and responsible management of resources.
