Explore and celebrate inclusion this Disability Action Week

Get involved in a variety of events during Disability Action Week 2024 from November 24 to December 1. 

This year’s theme is ‘Accessible Communication: connect, include and empower’ and Sunshine Coast Council, in partnership with our community, has developed a comprehensive calendar of events celebrating this important week.

Strong Community Portfolio Councillor Taylor Bunnag said the free family FUNctional Market Day on November 30 at the Millwell Road Community Centre in Maroochydore was a calendar highlight.

“Our community is invited to celebrate the creativity of people with disabilities,” Cr Bunnag said.

“From 10am to 3pm join us for live entertainment in the garden and take the opportunity to do some gift shopping from the many stalls.

“As a Council we want to help create a more inclusive region where everyone can participate equally, contribute fully and feel respected and valued, and Disability Action Week helps us celebrate everyone in our community.

“Be sure to visit Council’s website to see all the activities available during the week – from enjoying the freedom of the river sailing in Mooloolaba to trying chair yoga or aqua aerobics.”

Sunshine Coast Library accessibility:

Sunshine Coast Libraries offers a large range of resources that can be accessed by everyone.

All locations have wheelchair ramps or lifts and the Technology Collection includes vision impaired keyboards.

There are several collections that assist with all abilities such as the eLibrary, Audio Books, Large Type, Home Library Service, Literacy Services and Technology Help.

Our library events provide a wealth of information for our community and are open for age-appropriate bookings through our children and adult programs.

Sunshine Coast Council honours all Companion Card holders at all Council and Libraries events.

Council venues:

Council has partnered with Cérge to help make our Council venue more accessible. Cerge empowers people with disability to make assessment about a venue or experience and if it meets their accessibility needs. It does this by providing information in a variety of formats so the people will ‘know before they go’. Currently Venue 114 and Altitude Nine are available on the Cérge Companion App, with more Council venues to be added soon.

The FUNctional Market Day has also been made accessible through the Cérge app.
