Elevated experience as picturesque pathway opens

A long-awaited missing link in the Sunshine Coast's iconic Coastal Pathway network is now complete, with the opening of the new elevated boardwalk marking the final milestone in the Alexandra Headland Coastal Pathway Upgrade.

New elevated boardwalk through the forest

The project delivers a safer, more accessible and picturesque journey through one of our region's most spectacular coastal locations.

The upgrade has transformed approximately 680 metres of coastal pathway through Alex Bluff Foreshore Park, widening the previous 1.8-metre pathway to a 3.5-metre shared path, and better caters for the increasingly popular pathway route.

A standout feature of the project is the new elevated boardwalk, which provides an accessible connection through the forested section of the park, replacing a narrow and steep section that previously created challenges for people of all abilities - walkers, runners, riders, families and people with mobility issues alike.

Mayor Rosanna Natoli said the completed project would provide lasting benefits for the community while enhancing one of the Sunshine Coast's most-loved active transport and recreation routes.

"This Coastal Pathway is one of the Sunshine Coast's most treasured assets, used every day by residents and visitors getting out and being active or pausing for a moment to take in the sweeping views of the coastline,” Mayor Natoli said.

"Importantly, this upgrade removes a key accessibility barrier along the route and means more people can enjoy this stunning stretch between Alex Headland and Mooloolaba, regardless of their age, mobility or ability.

"The elevated boardwalk is a real highlight. It gently guides users through a change in the landscape while protecting the natural environment and opening up beautiful new perspectives of Alex Bluff.

"Whether you're heading out for a morning run, a walk with the family, a bike ride, checking the surf or taking in the views, this new pathway provides a safer, smoother and more enjoyable experience.”

Alex Community Association President John Hutchinson, local Ken Annett, Mayor Rosanna Natoli, Alex Community Association Josie Ryan and MP Fiona Simpson.

The project also features a new viewing platform, additional seating, shade trees balanced with open view corridors, landscaping, wildlife-friendly lighting and design elements that reflect the relaxed coastal character of Alex Bluff Foreshore Park.

Member for Maroochydore Fiona Simpson MP said the project was the result of all levels of government working together to deliver for the Sunshine Coast.

“The Alexandra Headland Coastal Pathway Upgrade has been delivered thanks to joint funding from the Queensland Government, Sunshine Coast Council and the Federal Government,” Ms Simpson said.

“It delivers new seating and viewing areas, lighting, and landscaping – improving accessibility to one of the Sunshine Coast's greatest natural assets and making it easier for people to walk, run and cycle.

“The upgrade also strengthens the connection to the recently improved Mooloolaba Northern Parklands pathway in my Maroochydore electorate.”

The project forms part of the Sunshine Coast’s 73-kilometre Coastal Pathway, stretching from Bells Creek in the south to Coolum in the north.
