Looking for a relaxed outdoor escape on the Sunshine Coast? Nestled between Maleny and Montville in the lush Obi Obi Valley, Baroon Pocket Dam offers an easy, scenic adventure that’s perfect for families, nature lovers and weekend wanderers.

A walk for everyone

The Martin Williams Walk is a gentle 2.2km loop that starts at the southern recreation area. With its mown grassy track and gradual terrain, it’s ideal for walkers of all ages, as well as recreational cyclists and mountain bike riders.

Whether you’re out for a casual stroll, riding with the kids, or just stretching your legs, this circuit makes it easy to enjoy the outdoors at your own pace.

Nature at every turn

As you make your way around the loop, keep an eye out for native wildlife. Nesting boxes tucked high in the trees provide safe homes for birds and possums, while towering Hoop and Bunya Pines create a peaceful forest backdrop.

The trail alternates between open grassy sections and shaded areas, offering a mix of sunshine and cool refuge along the way.

Lakeside views worth slowing down for

The highlight of the walk is the tranquil lakeside section. Here, Lake Baroon stretches out before you — calm, glassy and perfect for a pause.

Bring a camera, take in the view, or simply sit for a moment and enjoy the stillness. It’s these quiet moments that make the experience truly memorable.

Add a little extra adventure

If you’re on two wheels, try riding the loop clockwise for a fun, flowing section across the top. Prefer something easier? A shortcut halfway around lets you skip the slightly hillier section.

Make a day of it

The adventure doesn’t stop when the walk ends. The lakeside recreation area is set up for a full day out, with:

  • Picnic shelters and BBQs
  • A large playground
  • Open grassy spaces for relaxing
  • Opportunities for swimming (in warmer months) and fishing

If you’ve brought a kayak or paddleboard, the lake is also a fantastic spot to explore from the water.
