Wheels are in motion for the month of October as Sunshine Coast Council supports Love to Ride’s biggest challenge ‘Biketober’.

It’s a fun, free challenge anyone can join as an individual, with friends, or as part of a workplace contest with your co-workers.

The aim is simple, to get more people to enjoy the benefits of riding bikes. It’s great to see many participants making choices that benefit our health and the health of our region, switching the car for handlebars is a great way to make a difference. It’s also a lot of fun.

Biketober is promoted through  Council’s ThinkChange program  where we are working to empower our communities and workplaces to make informed travel choices and ThinkChange a new way to travel.

At a time when environmental issues, wellness, and money-saving are important factors for many, there has never been a better time to ride a bike.

Last year, almost 50,000 riders nationally took part in Biketober, and this year we’re hoping to push those numbers even higher.

There are lots of prizes up for grabs for individual riders too including a $4,000 holiday of your choice.

There’s a Love to Ride app, too, that can automatically log your bike rides and enable you to rate the comfort of your routes.

Once you’re signed up, you can log your bike rides, invite friends, learn new bike skills, and set riding goals - all at the click of a button.

What are the benefits?

  • Supercharged physical health – even a 10-minute bike ride will boost your immune system, improve cardiovascular health, and help you live longer.
  • Improved mental health – riding a bike is a mindful activity that promotes the release of endorphins and can reduce the causes of depression.
  • Reduced stress and anxiety - biking can calm the mind, improve self-confidence, and elevate your mood.
  • Protecting the planet – reduce your carbon footprint by leaving the car at home.
  • Saving money – cut down on transport costs and car maintenance.
