Clearing the way for Caloundra’s new town square

Sunshine Coast-based contractor Hutchinson Builders has been awarded the contract for the preparation of 77 Bulcock Street, marking an important milestone for the Caloundra Community and Creative Hub.

This is the first step in opening up the city centre - creating a seamless pedestrian link, more green space, improved lighting and pathways and a more welcoming public precinct.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli said that removing the former building would be a key milestone in Council’s Caloundra Centre Activation Project.

“This project will unlock a central site to create a more open and leafy people‑focused city centre,” Mayor Natoli said.

“The new public space precinct will link the Events Centre, new Library+, town square and Caloundra Regional Gallery through to Bulcock Street and the beach.”

Council Division 2 Councillor Terry Landsberg said he was excited to see the multi-million dollar project progress for the community.

“This will play a vital role in enhancing connection, supporting local business and creating a thriving destination for residents and visitors,” Cr Landsberg said.

“This project represents a long‑term investment in a more vibrant, welcoming and connected city centre.”

The Caloundra Town square project is jointly funded by Sunshine Coast Council and the Queensland Government.

Member for Caloundra Kendall Hatcher said the appointment of a contractor marked an exciting step forward for Caloundra’s city centre.

“This project is about opening up the heart of Caloundra, creating a greener, more welcoming town square that brings people together and strengthens connections between the city, the beach and local businesses,” Mrs Hatcher said.

“By investing alongside Council, the Crisafulli Government is helping deliver a vibrant public space that will serve the community now and into the future.”

What to expect during early works

The site works are underway and expected to take around four months, subject to weather and site conditions.

It will begin with the removal of internal fixtures and fittings before carefully removing the old building structure. Once demolition is complete, the site will be made safe and prepared for the next stage of the town square upgrade.

Locals and visitors will still have access to Caloundra’s Felicity Park – including to Omrah Avenue, the Library+ and The Events Centre. There will be some changes to Otranto Avenue car park to facilitate works and will reopen once demolition is complete.
