Chambers Island temporarily closed for vegetation clearing

Chambers Island will be temporarily closed to ensure your safety as we remove several dead trees and clear a section of dead vegetation from the island.

Dead tree for removal on Chambers Island

If you’re planning an outdoors adventure this week, please be aware that Chambers Island on the Maroochy River will be temporarily closed from Wednesday 28 to Friday 30 August 2024.

An assessment of the vegetation on Chambers Island has identified several dead and hazardous trees and a small section of dead vegetation that need to be cleared.

Sunshine Coast Council will remove them and clear the vegetation for health and safety reasons from Wednesday 28 to Friday 30 August.

Park closure

For the safety of our community, Chambers Island will be temporarily closed for the duration of this tree removal and vegetation clearing operation. Please comply with signage.

We thank our community for your understanding and patience during this time.

We look forward to reopening the island and welcoming back our community in time for the weekend.

Details

The dead trees and vegetation that need to be cleared include a large Camphor Laurel tree beside the playground and a large Hoop Pine next to the boat club.

These trees will be removed for the safety of our community who use the playground and boat club on the island.

Clearing the dead vegetation will also reduce the volume of forest fuels and help maintain fire adapted ecosystems.

In line with Council’s Environment and Liveability Strategy, the mulch, wood chip and salvaged tree material will be reused throughout our region in revegetation and offset projects where this material is absent.

There is no plan to replant in this open space area as there is plenty of natural regrowth in this area.

Nojoor Road boat ramp

We will be using a barge to help remove the green waste from Chambers Island. There may be some disruption to the Nojoor Road boat ramp at Twin Waters where the barge will be offloading the green waste.
