Boaties’ dream: run-down ramp gets $4.2m upgrade

From the early morning chatter of eager boaties to the rhythmic strokes of the Panamuna Outrigger Canoe Club – one of our region’s busiest waterways has a major new addition that’s been described as a boaties’ dream.
Since opening this month (June 2024), the $4.2 million dollar two-bay boat ramp and 32 trailer-parks at Outrigger Island, Minyama, on the stunning Mooloolah River, have been a hive of activity.
Sunshine Coast Council Division 4 Councillor Joe Natoli said he was pleased the extensive upgrade had significantly improved the practicality of the site.
“You have only got to take a look at the new facilities here and see how it’s improved the amenity and accessibility for all boaties, fishing and water lovers and community groups including local kayak and canoe clubs,” Cr Joe Natoli said.
“The new boat ramp includes a new two-lane boat ramp, a floating walkway to cast a line or pull the boat alongside and a redesigned and resurfaced carpark.
“This is a major improvement from the previous site which had quite rough terrain and a dirt site for boat trailer parking.
“The upgrade has been designed to take some pressure off the popular Parkyn Parade in Mooloolaba and La Balsa Park in Buddina boat ramps and will now meet community demand for boat launching facilities over the next 20 years.
“Thank you to our boaties and paddlers for your patience while we delivered this project.”

Council is pleased to deliver this project in partnership with the Australian and Queensland governments.
The Australian Government contributed to Council's landside works through its 2020-2024 Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
Assistant Minister for Regional Development and Senator for Queensland, Anthony Chisholm said this upgrade will ensure the island would remain to be accessible to locals for years to come.
“This part of the Mooloolah River is one of the Sunshine Coast’s best fishing spots. We’re proud to have played our part, through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program, to make this upgrade to the boat ramp a reality," Assistant Minister Chisholm said.
“I have no doubt that families and local boaties in the area will make good use of this new ramp, especially as we head into the warmer months.”
The Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Bart Mellish said Queensland Government contributed funding through its South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program and Maritime Infrastructure Investment Program.
“We’re proud to have helped deliver all the marine elements of the project including the boat ramp and floating walkway via the government’s Maritime Infrastructure Investment Program,” Minister Mellish said.
“The upgraded ramp is a sensational addition to improve recreational boating access for Sunshine Coast boaties.”
Construction started in September 2023 and was completed by mid-June 2024.
