Award recognises more inclusive Sunshine Coast

Sunshine Coast Council's Shine a Light on Racism campaign has been recognised for its contribution to building a more welcoming and inclusive community, winning the Diversity and Inclusion Champion Award at the Sunshine Coast Multicultural Communities Council Community Recognition Awards.  

The award celebrates individuals and organisations that actively promote diversity, equity and inclusion by creating welcoming environments and opportunities for people from culturally diverse backgrounds. 

Since launching in July 2022, the campaign has encouraged residents to move beyond being "not racist" and instead take positive action to challenge racism, support people who experience it and help create a more inclusive community. 

Strong Portfolio Councillor David Law said the award was a significant achievement and a reflection of the many community members, organisations and campaign patrons who have collaborated to co-design and support the initiative. 

"Council is proud to receive this recognition and to work alongside our campaign patrons and community to promote inclusion, respect and belonging," Cr Law said. 

"The Sunshine Coast is home to people from many different cultures and backgrounds, and we want everyone who lives, works or visits here to feel welcomed, valued and connected. 

"Shine a Light on Racism has encouraged important community conversations and provided practical ways for people to help create positive change." 

The campaign provides free resources and practical tools to help individuals, families, schools, sporting clubs, businesses and community groups take action against racism. Participants are encouraged to make a public pledge to build their understanding of discrimination and celebrate cultural diversity. 

The initiative is supported by multicultural and First Nations leaders, sporting representatives, business leaders, media personalities and other respected community members who help amplify its message across the Sunshine Coast. 

The award judges praised the campaign's leadership in addressing racism through education, awareness and community action, while helping create a safer and more welcoming Sunshine Coast for residents, visitors and newcomers alike.
