A $13.3 million boost for beachside revitalisation
Sunshine Coast Council welcomes a major funding contribution for a seaside upgrade.
An iconic Sunshine Coast foreshore has received more than $13 million dollars in funding ahead of its major transformation.
The Australian Government, Queensland Government and Council of Mayors SEQ announced today (14 January 2025) the final tranche of projects funded under the $285.8 million SEQ Liveability Fund.
Part of the final round of funding is $13.3 million for Mooloolaba Central Meeting Place.
Stage Two of the transformation includes improved beachfront parkland, new accessible pathways and viewing deck, better access to the beach and foreshore, enhanced community spaces, new modern public amenities and a terraced seawall.
Sunshine Coast Council Deputy Mayor Maria Suarez welcomed the major funding contribution.
“This is another example of all levels of government working together to upgrade the Mooloolaba Foreshore,” Cr Suarez said.
“This injection further enhances Council’s commitment to ensuring we deliver the best value project outcomes for our community while ensuring the lifestyle of our residents and visitors is maintained and prospers.
“The foreshore revitalisation will deliver valuable open space for recreation and play and will provide areas for our community to meet, gather and celebrate, as well as watch and participate in beach sports and public events.
“The SEQ City Deal Liveability Fund has now committed $31.95 million for the Sunshine Coast on projects that will make the Sunshine Coast an even more attractive destination to live and visit.
“This includes funding for new active transport links at Caloundra and Mooloolaba, and a new coastal pathway project at Alexandra Headland and Kings Beach.”
Federal Minister for Cities Jenny McAllister said South East Queensland was growing quickly.
“The Albanese Government is working with our partners to ensure everyone has access to the essential infrastructure that makes our communities great places to live,” Minister McAllister said.
“With nearly six million people expected to call SEQ home by 2046, we want to ensure that the region has a strong economy and thriving communities.
“From aquatic centres and bike trails to new coastal walks and sports centres, we are funding projects that will make a real difference to the quality of people's lives.”
Acting Minister for State Development, Infrastructure and Planning Ros Bates said the Crisafulli Government was committed to delivering infrastructure projects in partnership with local communities.
“Generational infrastructure is key to creating a thriving future that protects the lifestyle of those living in South East Queensland, and these projects prioritise local needs while promoting sustainable growth," Minister Bates said.
Next steps for revitalisation
Sunshine Coast Council will start minor construction works from February through to April 2025 across various locations within the Stage Two project area.
These preparatory works are designed to ensure a smooth transition to the major works period starting in May 2025 and continuing through to 2026.
Council is currently in the tendering phase for a construction contractor. Once appointed, Council will work with the successful contractor to guide the project’s timing, how it will be constructed and sequencing.
We look forward to sharing more with our community and local business operators soon.
